Two Buck Chuck
At our Leadership Team meeting this morning I asked the group if anyone knew about Two Buck Chuck. Two people reluctantly raised their hands and knew the wine was sold at Trader Joe’s for $2.99.
This is certainly a marketing phenomena because the brand is actually Charles Shaw. And while Trader Joe’s is the seller, the price is not two bucks but $2.99. And to the best of my knowledge, it is Trader Joe’s best-selling wine.
I think the average bottle of wine sells for $10-$20 and there are plenty of bottles well over $50. So I was thinking about the salon business and more specifically the retail business within the salon and how Two Buck Chuck could fit in. The answer came while sipping a glass of Shafer 1.5 Cab:
Three Buck Huck. The brand name would be Huckleberry Farms with Awapuhi as the main ingredient. The retail salon price would be $3.99.
And to make it simple: One shampoo and one conditioner for color-treated hair and one shampoo and one conditioner for all other types. We would also add a styling gel, pump hair spray and foaming mousse to the mix. Liters would be priced at $7.99.
I think this idea is fabulous especially in today’s tough times. What do you think about Three Buck Huck?
Happy Wednesday!

I think it is a good idea because it would let people feel as if they are spoiling themselves with salon products not at the salon price.

I love the idea. I think it would be a excellent retail item for salons not only because of the price, but salon clients will know they are getting a quality product since it will only be sold in salons.

Can you imagine the clients who already purchase the high end products, and then on top of it, slip in a couple three buck huck’s. This would increase sales for sure! Great idea!

I heard rumor that Two Buck Chuck is a result of a divorce and his desire to lose profits for himself in order to make sure the ex didn’t get them… but that could be just a rumor.
I think 3 Buck Huck is a good idea, you will tap into the Pantene / Herbal Essences / Garnier Fructise market… people will think they are getting salon products for a better deal than the drug store stuff. The trick is if it is good stuff (and Two Buck Chuck is!)

Trader Joes actually can offer the low prices because of an oversupply of South American grapes. They have unmasked the horrific markup in the prices of fine wine. Charles Shaw is a very good product. The company is profitable at these prices becuase of volume. If we could offer a quality product at these prices it would be awesome!

How about a little background on Huckleberry Farms.

I would love something like that for many of my accounts! Keep the clients out of the drug store aisles!

What about “Three Dollar Diva” from Ginger Lily Farms? The white ginger lily is the flower which blooms on the Awapuhi plant.

I would love to see a $3 savings on products. I believe the market for the premium product still exists and we usually get what we pay for as they say.
What if a manufacturer could offer a savings for bringing back your empty shampoo containers to be refilled at the salon.. At our salon we are trying to raise some awareness with saving on recycling – if the containers never even make it to those lovely blue bins and get re-used before that we are being even smarter. Also how about the savings on shipping less product and packaging (we have the fuel costs for manufacturing more packages, fuel to deliver them on trucks and packaging to ship them in)
