Detroit Wins Unhealthiest Women Award

Just in time for the biggest eating day of the year, SELF magazine released its annual Unhealthiest Survey of U.S. cities. Detroit came in dead last.

Categories included obesity, working out, smoking, eating, crime, safety, stress and overall personal management.

Truthfully, I’m tired of the city I live in being dead last in most statistics. After five painful years, all of a sudden other states that are now feeling pain are actually understanding what we have been going through.

What is it going to take for Detroit to move out of last place and into at least the middle of the pack? Let’s start with the SELF survey. Most women interviewed would most likely say they are healthy.

So the question of the day right before the best eating day of the year is: Are you healthy and what do you do to be healthy?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Healthy….after all this encouragment to Feast tomorrow?
By the way – did you see (in the news) the couple married for 71 years, talk about engaged!
    Happy Turkey Day!

I believe I am healthy, but I could be better. I try to eat yogart everyday and I avoid anything fried. That has always been my rule of thumb. If a chicken pita at the local coney comes with french fries, ask for rice or cottage cheese instead. You don’t have to settle for the fried foods just because the menu says so. Also Larry’s demo of how much sugar is in pop really made me stop drinking it all together. I would rather save the calories on a big piece of pumpkin pie!

    Happy Thanksgiving…

I like to think that I am healthy.. Unfortunatly I’m an extremely picky eater.. Chicken, veggies and sushi… that’s it for me, everything else scares me. So, if I weren’t so picky, I would probably be super unhealthy. I never got to see Larry’s demo on Soda, but, it’s true, it has so much sugar, plus carbonation is gross!

    Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I feel like I am healthy, but there are times where I do mess up and have to have something sweet cause I do have a sweet tooth! But I try to eat mostly organic foods and try to work out at least a couple of times a week! Also I try to drink a lot of water everyday, instead of pop or other unhealthy things even though I do drink coffee, but I have to have my coffee! I also agree with Anastasia about the fried foods and getting a salad or cottage cheese instead of the fries. It does make a difference when you eat healthier. I think you feel better.

I went for a full physical this year and received a clean bill of health. I try to watch what I eat and try to eat in moderation. Tomorrow, I will eat a light breakfast, then go to the 8 a.m. Jazzercise class. I’ll eat a light lunch in preparation for the thanksgiving feast. I know I will want to try some of everything for dinner tomorrow but I will just try to take small helpings of everything. I don’t enjoy leaving the table feeling so stuffed I can hardly move!

I also go to Jazzercise at least 3 times per week…I feel much better when I exercise regularly. I avoid buying junk food and soda….so I rarely eat it. It is much easier to resist if you just don’t buy it.

I am in good health but I am over weight because I use to do everything for others and put my self last.

Since I started here I joined a gym and have put myself first.

I have not changed how much I do for others I just put my tv shows and other fun activites for myself last. I am starting to loose weight and I love myself again.

I have a great husband who is an awsome cook and I had to teach me not to get mad at me if I don’t go for seconds. He finally understands that I want to be at my proper weight and I want to look close to what I use to.

Larry, Thank you so much for having such a great program for your workers. I feel like I am important again… I am very thankful for having this job.

    Thanks again

    Yay Tina!! Way to go!!!

I can relate to what Tina said. It’s so easy to focus concerns on others and not have Yourself on ‘ The List’ of things to take care of.
The past year for me, my health has been last. The One thing I’m so happy about is this year I Completlely quit smoking. I kept saying I would quit when my life was less stressful… Ha! I realized it could be a while before that happens, so I just threw the couple I had left out. I never got another pack since.
I am So glad to be rid of them!
Now if I could just quit my addition to chocolate…M&M’s are always calling my name….
    Happy Holiday’s All!!

  9. Tina D Says:

Thank you Ryan that means so much to me. You just gave me more courage to reach my goals.

I also can relate to the above person I quit smoking over 10 years ago. It gets easier and easier everyday.

    Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!!

I will be at the casino donating and having fun.

I know that I could be healthier.. but around the holidays.. I know better than to try and diet. Our family does Thanksgiving tomorrow and then we do Christmas on Sunday with another large “feast”. But after the holidays I know that I have to get back into shape. I have always had high blood pressure and my doctor would probably say I am overweight. So, Looks like I will be hopping back on the ol’ diet wagon after the holidays.
    Gobble Gobble!!
    Happy Thanksgiving!!

  11. Crystal S Says:

I’d like to think of myself as healthy…but I know I could be better. I do smoke…not a whole lot though.
My big thing is eating! But since I’ve joined weight watchers I’ve lost 15 lbs, and I feel amazing.
So Thank you Larry and Teresa! Thank you for giving us a great place to work, and that you for caring about your employees!! That really means a lot to us!

    Happy Holidays!

  12. Cruz Says:

I really have to thank my mother for my eating habits, which leads to my good health.
She never kept pop/soda, chips, cookies or anything we really didn’t need, wasn’t healthy or wasn’t fresh in our home.
Eating habits begin at a very young age or when certain health issues arise.
I have many health issues but I consider myself in excellent health due to my eating habits & way of life!
No smoking, no drinking, plenty of rest, I eat what I want!
    And remember stress will kill’ya!!
But hey to each their own!!

Does anyone else think that TNG is like a cult?

  14. Diana Graham-Foster Says:

I may not be as healthy as I can be, but taking care of my mother who was a diabetic, and pretty much died from bad eating and a poor lifestyle has enlightened me. I smoke, but realize I need to quit, and working here is helping me with that. I rarely drink, although once upon a time I did my fair share. Working out? With four children and my husband working the opposite shift as me, not a very likely possibility, although I have made the “ATTEMPT”. All-in-all I am on the passage way to losing weight….down 10lbs since Nov. 3 Wish me luck!!!

    Dear Anonymous

It seems to me that you are very jealous and a bit bitter that you don’t work for such a great company.

I look at this blog as a great way to motivate me on my weight loss journey.

Our employer offers a great program where he helps us pay for our weight loss journey as far as helping us pay for gym memberships and other great health programs.

Larry does this because he cares about us!!!! Plus it keeps the cost of our health insurance down.

We do so much for the American Cancer Society and our community so if you want to think we are a cult then go ahead….

We are a family each and everyone of us we are here to encourage each other and help each other out.

Larry, I want to thank you so much for all you do for us and can you please explain why someone would think of us as a cult instead of a big family. I love this company.

  16. Larry Says:

    To both A’s:

The first A may work for TNG and is simply asking a question.

“Cult” has many meanings and mostly negative and religious based. But one meaning A may be referring to is that a population of people believe in a person, idea or concept to the point they live it. Health and well-being have always been corner stones of our company and true results only come when it’s a life-style. When people sees results, they get excited and that excitement transfers to others. So it a cult? I would prefer to say being engaged at what we do and focusing on our strengths make the difference in what TNG stands for.

Now let’s see if we can sell something on Black Friday!

  17. Q Says:

This is a belated response to the “Cult” comment.
Passion for something you believe in strongly can be mistaken for cult-like behavior and LG passionately believes in TNG. This passion does not just revolve around LG and his “minions” but it extends to the community. I had a customer come in on Saturday and tell a story of just how giving LG can be.
Several years ago this customer had a nail salon that was 1year and 1 month old when the strip plaza it was located in burnt to the ground. Within hours, other salon owners came to lure her employees and clients away to their salon. This vulture-like behavior appalled and freightened her. With no where else to turn, she called Larry and explained the situation to him. He told her not to worry and he would get her back in business ASAP. He found a new location for her and showed up with two trucks loaded to the gills with equipment and product plus several guys to help unload and set-up. She was up and running within 28 hours from the time of the fire and didn’t loose one client or employee. To add icing on the cake for her, LG said for her to not worry about paying him back but he would collect payment once her insurance company settled! Talk about going over the top. She is now a life long customer and cannot speak highly enough of the generosity of Larry.
If this is a cult and LG is the leader, call me a follower of one so generous.
