A Cup of Joe

McDonald’s will soon spend $100 Million marketing their new McCafe’s featuring $2.29 tall latte’s. The powers to be calculate their market to be worth a cool $1 Billion. My bets are with them.

But let’s face it. That’s a lot of money for a cup of Joe. Let’s look at the choices available:

1. At-home brew per cup:    $.25

2. At-home packet per cup:  $.65

3. Fast-food per cup:           $.89

4. Gas station, any size:      $.99

5. Tim Horton’s, Dunkin’       $1.19

6. Starbucks, tall:                $1.49

7. Office blend:                   FREE

If McDonald’s can get you to upgrade your coffee purchase to $2.29, imagine the profits they will make. Imagine the increase in sales. And imagine why you would upgrade in the first place.

All for a cup of Joe. And here is the biggest reason why McDonald’s will succeed: coffee is addicting and once we form a habit where we buy, we stick to it.

What are you drinking?

Happy Tuesday!

Is it worth picking up a few shares? I tried their coffee products and never went back.

  2. T T Says:

I am not much of a coffee drinker but when the urge strikes me, I only go to Dunkin’ Donuts. They have amazing coffee!

  3. V~~~~ Says:

I don’t like coffee my only addiction is Mnt. Dew! but if it went for $2.29 for a cup of it, I’d turn to water!

  4. Gary Lincoln Says:

On the road, Starbucks iced coffee (black).
At home, we have a Tassimo coffee machine.

Im not into coffee! Dislike the taste, Love the fresh ground smell. Especially the red bag of 8 o’clock my mom used to let me take to get ground up at Farmer Jack’s.
Good luck with that Mc D’s! People ae already hooked on all the hidden sugar, and fat in the food. Might as well get em hooked on the caffine too.
By the way does anyone emember the fast food movie about the McDonalds diet, and how one of the side effects from the food on a perfectly healthy adult male was that his liver pretty much turned to goo…Yum.

**hides his mcdonald’s latte cup under his seat**

It was called Super size me. The guy ate it for 30 days every meal.

I think he was almost hospitalized.

I am going to stick with the starbucks iced coffee with cream and 1 sugar. The coffee at Mc Donalds has always tasted like pencil shavings to me not worth $2.29

  9. Kelly Says:

I can tell you one thing I’m NOT drinking and that’s COFFEE! I enjoy cool and crisp diet pepsi! I also drink a lot of water, OJ and milk. On the McDonalds tip I like their sausage burritos!! 300 calories of goodness. I am addicted LOL!

  10. KRISTI Says:

There is a big difference between a brewed coffee and a latte! The cost is much greater for the espresso and milk than just the brewed coffee.

I used to spend $4.67 for a Grande White Mocha from Starbucks!!!!

Now…I buy Folgers and make it at home with French Vanilla Fat Free creamer. Much cheaper and tastes great!!!!

  11. Anonymous Says:

Maybe we should start selling coffee too:)

  12. Danielle Says:

    I run on Dunkin…

  13. Anonymous Says:

I’m with Kelly – a large Diet Pepsi every morning!

    oops, last post was me.

  15. Crystal S. Says:

I am addicted to coffee! I can’t get through my mornings without at least 2 cups. 1 when I wake up, and 1 when I get to work…
I do love my Mocha frap/french vanilla frap from Starbucks once in awhile…but I do admit that Dunkin Donuts does have the BEST coffee ever!!! Loooove it!
But I buy the French Vanilla Creamer and make my own yummies at home! lol

I am a Starbucks junkie…I have cut down to about once per week for a latte. At home, I brew Starbuck’s French Roast and I have to use real half and half. I only drink one cup per day and I figure I might as well make it a good one.

As for McDonald’s coffee…I had a latte from there once and it was terrible! Not worth the savings at all. I’d rather go to Starbucks less often and actually enjoy my cup of coffee!

  17. Dawn Says:

I’ll take the Tim Horton’s, even if I have to brew it at home. Why is it never as good when you make it at home?

Of course, I my preference is to have it Canada. For some reason Canadian Tim Horton’s is better than what you can buy here in the states.

  18. Amy Says:

I’ve just recently stopped drinking coffee because of the effects caffeine has on our immune system. Plus I’m trying to drastically reduce my dairy intake. My morning cup(s) of java was a cold/flu just waiting to happen!! It’s been an interesting adjustment….zzzz’s……wait, did my head just hit the keyboard?? Where’s my lemon ginger water?

  19. Michelle Says:

I’ve just become even more loyal to Starbucks. They have added a gluten free cake to their menu which means people like my husband who cannot eat gluten, can now go in and have a snack too. This will be great when we are on a road trip. I don’t see McDonalds adding a gluten free item to its menu any time soon.

  20. Filomena Says:

    I love Tim Horton’s Coffee…..

  21. JT Says:

so… Im on a low carb diet and I just ordered the med. non fat mocha at mc d’s this morning..

It tasted HORRIBLE!!! Like they brewed cigarette buts!

I looked at the nutrtion info….. For a SMALL like 300 calories and 47 Carbs! and I got a MEDIUM!.

Great, now i can’t eat the rest of the day

  22. Amy Says:

    JT,

MD’s may have taken out the fat, but they didn’t reduce the real culprit. SUGAR!! If you’re rollin with low carb, you gotta do sugar free :)

  23. diane Beshara Says:

ahhh food brings out our blogging best.
I tried Mcdonalds coffee a couple of times once when I bought it and once when my daughter bought it . It was terrible. I am a starbucks fan.

  24. Anonymous Says:

    Mc Donalds stinks.

  25. JT Says:

    yeah I know… but I thought.. oh it won’t be THAT bad… lol :)
    boy was I wrong!!!!

  26. Kim B. Says:

Dunkin Donuts all the way!!! 5 creams/5 sugars….Obviously, I’m not the biggest fan of black coffee:)

  27. Anonymous Says:

I just chew grounds for a quick pick me up. Why bother brewing. The abrasion cleans your teeth too.

  28. A.Cruz Says:

Bad Breath, Yellow teeth, Headaches(if you have not had it in a while), etc…too many side effects with coffee. As stated above not all coffee is/tastes the same or good. Plus as Eraina & Carly know I am spoiled with the real mountain grown, home roasted & ground coffee. Which is only good once in a while if ya really now how to enjoy a freshly brewed cup, it’s nice when you can add your own touch/flavors.
But Jasmine or White Tea is my thing.
But hey to each their own!

  29. Katharine Says:

Nothing beats it at home. I love Trader Joe’s Bay Style coffee or any of their organic blends, and then with just a pinch of International Delights English Toffee or Irish Cream creamer…delicious and I haven’t drank my calories away for the day.

  30. JT Says:

i brought my own coffee today! with sugar free coconut creamer!!! awesome! and the large 32 oz cream cost as much as my mc donalds coffee yesterday!! :)

  31. Kate Says:

I drink plain black coffee all day every day. I miss Community Coffee from down south. My favorites are Chase & Sanborn, Hills Bros. and Gevalia Kenya. Commercially, I like Tim Horton’s, McD’s and Dunkin occasionally.

Michelle-my friend is reopening her bakery, Sugar Kisses in Berkley (Coolidge & Catalpa) this month. The bakery is completely wheat free. The flours they use primarily are rice, spelt and oat.

  32. Katharine Says:

I LOVE Sugar Kisses, I’m glad to hear they are reopening! I would get pumpkin pie from there for thanksgiving, it was always a hit with the family.

  33. Kate Says:

Lisa and Brian are waiting for the final inspection from the Fire Marshall. Try the big chewy brownies or the lava cake. Lisa also does bread and custom cakes. (She used to be the pastry chef @ the Whitney).
