Question: With Michigan’s population below 10 million and with over 100,000 residents leaving the state each year, how many more residents would leave if they could sell their home?

Question: How many years will it take Michigan to recover 1 million lost jobs over the past decade?

Question: How bad will commercial real estate be in 2010?

Question: With Cox’s handling of the "what party?" incident, what chances does he have for governor?

Question: If you shop at Walmart for everything, how much will the average family save in one year?

Question: How many people in the world live in poverty (earn less than $2 a day)?

OK, I’m going out on a limb and get Lou Dobbs on the phone to answer the last question.

"Lou, what happened yesterday? After 30 years with CNN, why such an abrupt resignation?" Lou: "I’m ready to pursue new opportunities."

OK, Lou didn’t have the answer. The answer is 5 billion. The world population is about 7 billion. About three-quarters of the world lives in poverty.

As both the News and Freep pointed out today, we have serious issues. At least Michigan’s population isn’t living on $2/day but if it did, I’m sure Walmart would be saving us money.

Point is, we have to do something about this. And we have to do it now. And what we can do?

Things that don’t cost a dime. Smile. Say thanks. Say hello. Smile. Laugh. Volunteer. Smile. Engage yourself in whatever you do. Be part of a team. Smile.

It’s not easy and it’s not going to get easier. But it’s time the News and the Freep tell us something good; we already know the bad.

Happy Thursday!

That’s why I don’t watch or read the news anymore… too depressing. My sister keeps up with all of the news, politics, etc, and is constantly stressed out…

    I totally agree!!

This is why I believe we are so selfish in America, ignoring it dosent make the world a better place.

While driving home from work last night, I heard the discussion on the radio that Michigan ranked 41 out of 50 states in happiness/positivity.
I think that can be attributed to our economy. What was heart warming, were the callers who had great things to say about our state. Some callers were from other states and other countries. With the Great Lakes,
the four beautiful seasons, and the good people who live here we have a lot to appreciate. So yes SMILE.

You must smile, if not you only bring yourself down more and those around you. Things that really matter in life right now is waking up every morning and being thankful for the roof over your head and the food on the table. We have to figure out what the difference between your wants and needs are and just enjoy the life you have.

For the first time in my life, I am learing to be content and fulfilled with the things I have in my life, and not the things that I want. I have been blessed in many ways and am choosing to focus on that everyday instead of all of the bad things going on in this economy.

I only know of three beautiful seasons, with the first half of spring and the second half of autumn being iffy……..Ridiculous heating bills are another reason people are migrating to the warm states.

I agree with Melissa, and refuse to watch the news, and will sit up and watch Family Guy and 2 1/2 men something that will make me laugh and relaxc the mind and soul. And while some people think this is ridiculus because you aren’t seeing the world, I beg to differ. The news is designed to scare the population. The go on about which plane crashed here and which boat sank there. But you don’t here about the hundred of flights that took off that day and arrived safe and sound. It still a business and in this particular business fear, scandal, and gossip sells. People talk about keeping up on the government officials and whats happening in the white house. But guess what, you still aren’t going to know any more than what they want you to know. Its not getting the troops home faster, its not even disturbing people enough to strive for global peace. All it is doing is pacifying the public with the same conclusion that the world is messed up and times are bad. Me personally I am tired of hearing about how bad times are, who killed some innocent people trying to steal a car so now they getting executed and while more troops die in a war they no one can understand. Its depressing to be spoon fed a little bit truth, or too much lies. I already have enough stress, depression, and fatigue why would I turn on a show that for 25 minutes shows nothing but sorrow and suffering and the last 5 minutes show the only dumb funny thing….a best man at a wedding tripping and knocking the bride and groom into the water. Thats okay I will stick with my 2 hours of mindless humor till my saturday morning cartoons come on. Me I rather laugh and nurish my inner kid, then stress and worry about that which I can’t control.

    AMEN!

History bears out that people in command of the facts have misjudged Michigan’s prospects. Here follows an excerpt from Empire Builders by Burton W. Folsom Jr.

Not only was Michigan regarded as cold and remote, the experts declared it swampy and almost uninhabitable. James Monroe wrote to Thomas Jefferson that Michigan “will never contain a sufficient number of inhabitants to entitle them to membership in the confederacy.” Edward Tiffin, the surveyor-general of the United States, did a survey of Michigan in 1812 and concluded that only about one acre in a hundred could be farmed.

But the fact is, entrepreneurs have a history of success in Michigan and in spite of the odds they have prevailed.
