Three Weeks To Christmas

The government announced today the first decline this year in the unemployment rate to 10%. November car sales inched up to the 10.9 million level from 10.5 million the month prior. However, retail sales were down suggesting more promotions and markdowns coming.

While the news is up and down, the fact that Christmas is coming in only 3 weeks is dead on. I can’t believe it. In fact, I still can’t believe that Thanksgiving was a week ago today. Time is marching forward.

Christmas still means gift giving and even though 2009 has been the toughest year on record, gifts will still be bought.

What better way to get into the gift giving mood than deciding what gifts to buy. Based on bebeautiful stats this season, anything that "plugs in" is hot and skin care gift sets are also hot.

So let’s have some fun and figure out the list.

One of our neigbors house caught fire a couple weeks ago and every local neighbor did something to help them out. My next door neighbor took their dog. They’re generosity comes at a heavy price……He never stops barking and actually howls at night.

For some strange reason I don’t think they’re coming back for their dog.

I donated gloves, hats, and food to the homless downtown and even went and helped the church twice tis year.
I next one would be cash or gift card

my sister usually can’t afford to give her kids a Christmas, so i always step in and play Santa at the last minute. they don’t have to know where the gifts came from, as long as they are happy. that’s what family is for.

Our church has an Angel Tree every year and does something called “The Big Give.” It helps unfortunate families in our community with a special monetary donation/offering, as well as a food drive. Jeff, my husband, & I picked a 13 yr. old girl from the Angel Tree who would like hair and body products (how perfect – LOL!). We also both volunteered to pack and delivery food drive boxes. That is first on our list for us, second would be cash/gift cards, third would be a flat screen TV. They are all something we both would enjoy.

Just recently my Church organized a fundraiser called the “Broken” campaign. We were able to raise enough money for a family, who did not attend our Church but were part of our community, to get caught up on their mortgage so they wouldn’t lose their home and pay off past due bills as well as give their children a Christmas. The father of the family was just called back to work :)
A flat screen t.v is always nice to have, but then again so is cash :)

I know we are doing chistmas lists but, What if we did a food drive one year!? We could bring in one no perishable food item per talent (or however many you would like to donate) and then we can give it to a shelter? I can only imagine in Michigan how many families are in need.

Anyone else think this would be a GREAT idea?

  8. Carly Says:

Or instead of a can food we do a toy!?

  9. Dawn Says:

I think that is a great idea!!! We have done food drives and adopted families in the past. I would be more than willing to bring in a donation!!!

  10. Tina Says:

    I like it Carly. =)

  11. Shannon Says:

    I would donate for sure!

  12. Melissa O. Says:

    My List:

1.) Donations: I have donated new toys to the “Angel Tree” every year..this will be year eight. I try to pick more than one child if I have the extra.

    2.) cash

3.) Super Mario Bros. game for Wii

Ps….I really like Carly’s idea…we could do it each year at the anual meeting: The TNG Worldwide Holiday Food Drive.

  13. Tina Says:

Melissa…..the Mario Bros game for Wii is AWESOME!!! My son and I have beaten everything, but that very last Bowser!!! LOL

Carly, I love the food drive idea! My mom and I like to participate in Operation Christmas Child, by filling a shoe box for either a boy or girl. It’s an easy way to teach my son about giving to those that are less fortunate.

Other things on my list would just be maybe some clothes and cash.

Personally I really don’t care for Christmas, sorry to be martor, but I don’t feel it is as special as it should be. Maybe I’m a scrooge, or just lost the spiritof Christmas that other have, but I try to make everyday Christmas instead of that one day. Donating clothes to the salvation army, giving a few dollars to those that you know are acually homeless and not just holding up a “homemade” sign. To me Christmas is about personal reflection on your life, how to make it better to enrich others around you, and to celebrate the birth (if you follow the religious concept). I guess because missing so many holidays with the family, I don’t see it as one day to brighten the world, but rather one day that the world trys to better itself. Peace on Earth, better to Give than to receive, alll these noble notions and gestures of the holiday. Well I challenge the WORLD, to extend these ideas beyond just the Christmas holiday, make it last year round. Otherwise I’m just giving out the typical ol’ BAH HUMMMBUG!!!
