Are You “Cool?”

Did you consider yourself cool in high school?

Remember when people were “cool?” They exuded coolness. Remember Henry Winkler playing Fonzie? Fonzie was cool. Happy Days ran from 1974 to 1984, so 10 years of coolness. Fonzie was cool because he wore the leather jacket, greased back his hair, and was a chick magnet.

If you think about it, American Crew was born around that time and what were their first styling products? Firm Hold Gel and Pomade. Fact is, everyone wanted to be cool.

I recall in elementary, junior and high school all the cool people. They were head of their “cliques” and if they deemed you not cool enough, you couldn’t join. Alas, I was never part of any clique.

Jocks were always cool. Cheerleaders were especially cool. Even some teachers were cool (the first to sport a calculator).

But where did the term “cool” come from? Some say it was from Calvin Coolidge with his slogan “Keep cool with Coolidge.” Some say it came from the jazz era in the 1930’s with the debut of cool jazz.

Rock stars were cool too. Some say Clinton was cool (hmmm, wonder why). Movie stars are born cool. Howard Stern is cool but not so much Oprah.

Is “cool” coming back? The “Y” generation is about “me” so I’m not so sure. What I do know is that people idolize celebrities, sports stars, musicians and “cool” people like never before.

Here is an idea. Elvis had to be the coolest one on the planet (the Beatles were never cool). He had the hair going well before the Fonze. Let’s idolize him into the salon industry and start a “cool” revolution.

It’s Now or Never!

Happy Thursday!
