How many times a week do you wash your hair?

Sometimes it feels like you spend half your life filling things up especially if you have a large family that neglects such duties. With just the two of us there is always stuff to be filled: Bottled water in the fridge; mouthwash; Ziploc bags; coffee pods; paper towels; toilet paper; tissue paper; gas tank; pepper mill; and salt shaker.

Then there are things to need to replaced like light bulbs (LED one of the great inventions) and batteries.

And finally once a week, all that adds up to a lot of garbage. I’m still amazed how much garbage we accumulate. And with Amazon deliveries, one recycle container isn’t enough.

$500 Million was the tab MSU settled on to pay the Nasser victims. Not only was it the largest in history for a university to pay, there are so many untold costs we will never know of. Good news is that MSU and the victims can move forward towards the healing process. And undergrad enrollment hit yet another new high.

There are some 30 million small businesses in the USA. Of those, how many do you think are part of the MLM (multi-level marketing) scheme? A huge percentage. Too bad since more than 99% of those who buy in lose money. Can someone please tell me why anyone wants to be part of MLM? My only guess: The ability to buy direct at a discount.

Is Tesla boring? Absolutely! Right underneath Tesla’s massive plant in Freemont, CA, the Boring Company is building underground tunnels to help alleviate traffic. Add Space X to the mix and you can say Tesla has all travel options covered top to bottom.

Leave it to Amazon to pull off yet another coup that no one thought possible (except for me of course). Amazon’s Pro Beauty business is soaring and their strategy paid off big time: Let their third-party resellers discount the goods and then go direct to the brands to cut them off if they sold to Amazon direct. Bingo. Already the likes of Oribe, Colorproof, Pureology, Davines and Olaplex have gone direct with Amazon. Today’s $100 question: For every dollar Amazon sells of salon products, who is losing a dollar in sales? You got that answer spot on.

What’s good for Amazon is certainly not good for professional beauty companies. Coty, Revlon & Sally Beauty Holdings all reported disappointing results and hit fresh new lows (or came very close).

Yet another reason for the bad news: The likes of Madison Reed and esalon.com are expanding their availability to bricks and mortar stores. Personalized at-home hair color is growing and guess who the losers are? You got that answer spot on too! It appears the one salon concept that is Amazon and retail-proof is the growing blow-out bars led by Drybar and its infamous CEO, John Heffner. And nail salons that feature gel nail polish, especially EMMA V.S.G.P. that is getting rave reviews for its high gloss, longevity and easy removal.

We just returned from Greece where the people, culture and history are second to none in the world. You know what else is second to none in Greece? VAT (value added tax) is 24% and is payable on everything including food, drugs, hotels, etc. Greeks also pay a 20% flat tax and because the country is in a crisis, they have to prepay their tax each year. Even worse: Average Greek income is $10,000 per year. That means the average Greek citizen pays $2000 in income tax leaving $8000 and if they spend it in one year, they will pay $1920 in VAT. Net amount is $6080. YIKES!

Can you believe this weekend is Memorial Day? We still haven’t had Spring let alone summer coming up. Add to the fact Independence Day is on a Wednesday.

Happy holidays to you!

I was in LA for a couple days and met with the Cuccio team in regards to the polish and gel color launch. Demand has outstripped supply and seeing firsthand the production team filling bottles, it was decided best to launch January 2013 instead of now. The good news is that Cuccio will be fully prepared at that time to meet the needs of everyone and instead of launching 24 shades of Veneer, all 60 shades will be available.

Moroccanoil is launching their body line next month and they will be yet another hair care company trying to bust into the spa market. The pricing is high but the packaging is exquisite. The line will only be available to Loyalty salons and those that spend at least $1000 a month making it more exclusive. Based on Moroccanoil’s success, if any company can make it in the spa arena, it will be them.

Pinch me but today really isn’t the last day of August, is it? And surely the last summer holiday weekend doesn’t start tomorrow. YIKES, those yellow school busses will be on the road next week???

Our seven-month old grandson is coming in and already the BUB is making him fresh foods just for him. And of course the fruits and veggies are organic. I don’t even get organic produce! And you should see the high chair.

College football season kicks off this weekend with STATE playing a really big game tonight and that school in Ann Arbor playing a really big game as well. My prediction: MSU: W  The other school: L

OPI’s Germany collection blew away the previous collections hands-down. Does the name of the collection or the colors of the collection matter most?

It’s hard to believe Beauty Buzz is only 5 weeks away. The MSU dance team will be performing live, more Spartan spirit. One of the highlights will be Jonathan Antin live, he has quite a show planned.

Cyclists have the same right of way on the road as automobiles. What are your thoughts on that?

Apple vs. Samsung. USA vs. Korea. There are more Samsung devices sold that Apple. Does anyone care what country any product comes from anymore? Meanwhile, Apple wins their lawsuit in the USA and loses in Japan. What does that say?

Mitt has wrapped up the Republican convention along with Ron Paul. November will surely be interesting.

John Heffner is OPI’s new President. He has nails in his blood.

Everyone is loving our new Flagship store and Academy. The most amazing thing is that some customers didn’t even know we had the Academy in the old location. Really?

Forget vampires and wizards. The hot thing now is Dominator’s and Submissive’s. More than 20 million copies of 50 Shades of Grey have already been sold. And now come the copy cats by the dozens.

100 million less people went to the movies over the summer. I can’t remember the last time I went.

Happy Friday!

How much time do you exercise a week?

How can it be Friday already when it was just Monday? Is it really July 15 and wasn’t it just the holiday weekend? So I’m thinking where does the time go and I came up with my life’s ratio: 1:4:1:3. One part working out in the AM, 4 parts work, 1 part going home after work until bedtime and 3 parts sleep. Sounds like a very balanced ratio but yet, time still flies. What is your ratio?

If anyone deserves a round of applause after leaving a company, it’s John Heffner. After spending 14 years at CND, many of those as President and reporting to Colomer in Spain, John took a sweet package, a one year consulting gig and now is prepared to plan the rest of his life on his terms. John is the perfect gentleman and he had his share of successes and failures during his tenure just as most CEO’s do. Perhaps his biggest bust was the relaunch of CND polish especially when he did the relaunch at a big trade show, Buy 1, Get 1 Free. Of course his biggest success was Shellac so always good to go out blazing. I’m sure John will end up at another great company or perhaps he will start his own. One thing I know for certain, John will keep everyone updated. Good luck John!

I’ve been driving without the radio lately and love it. Try it sometimes and notice the difference.

Having a party this weekend and making homemade Sangria. Ever have it? It’s very yummy but the key to success with any Sangria is that you have to make it the day before. Why not make some this weekend?

Our annual blood drive is coming up August 4. Do you know your blood type and have you given blood? Once you get past the enormous needle, it’s not too bad. If you are around Farmington Hills, please give blood!

The last Harry Potter movie is out and will most likely be a huge success. I loved reading the books and while only seeing a couple of the movies, Harry will be missed. But not as much as Lord of the Rings, was that good or what!

Looks like talking on a cell phone and holding a cell phone while driving will be outlawed soon enough. Good idea.

Looks like the 2011-2012 football season is back on track, shocking. Now what about our government?

Watch out Asia. Demand for U.S. cheese is soaring as Asians get hooked on pizza. Can Nutri System Asia be far away?

Happy Friday!
