Out Of My Mind On A Tuesday Mornin’
Tuesday, June 28th, 2011The calm before the storm? Cosmoprof, the industry’s big (well, they think big) trade event is a month away in Las Vegas, yet the industry has been eerily quiet over the past few months. Not a whisper from the big players as there hasn’t been a major announcement in a very long time.
I watched the HBO movie, Reagan, over the weekend. It was quite good and when Reagan won after trying two previous times, it was because of the mood of the country at the time. Sound familiar 30 years later? Is there any candidate that even comes 50% close to what Reagan offered the American people back then? Did you know he was the only elected President that was previously divorced?
China’s one child policy is causing the country great issues. Since parents don’t want girls, there is now an abundance of boys, many finishing high school and college. Problem: No girls for them to marry. Parents are buying homes for their “boy” in hopes he finds a girl and this has helped cause a huge housing shortage, many of whom say a bubble is near. Worse, in less than 20-40 years, the average age of China will be so old, there won’t be anyone left to farm or run the factories. Perhaps China will offer financial incentives for couples to have a girl in the near future.
The Industry Source Arlington Texas store is now open! Great job to Catt, Carly, Michel, Nicole, Jason and others getting it ready. Next up: Austin locations.
Perhaps the biggest scam over the past 20 years is college tuition hikes. How can they continue to get away increasing tuition 7% or more every year, or triple the rate of inflation? Federal government backed school loans is the answer. Virtually everyone qualifies regardless of income or ability to pay back so colleges continue to hike tuitions based on demand. Problem? Student loans outstanding is larger than all credit card debt combined. Another bubble?
Are Facebook, Groupon and Twitter going to around in 5-10 years? And if so, why?
The NFL strike is getting close to either being resolved or killing the upcoming season. Bad news for businesses that rely on the NFL for income. Here a few examples: Fantasy football is $280 million; $850 million gambled in Las Vegas on games; 1,000,000 pizzas sold by Papa John’s alone on Super Bowl Sunday; and $200 average amount spent by a tailgater.
Worse snack food according to Harvard researchers? Potato Chips. Also ranked high: Popcorn, Cocoa Puffs, soda and French Fries. French Fries caused the most weight gain, average eater of them gains one pound a year just on fries. YIKES!
Thebeautybook Fall Edition is arriving this week and will be in our customer’s mailboxes by July 7. The Industry Source magazine arrives around the same time. Lots of good stuff coming soon!
BUB and I went to the original Original House of Pancakes in Grosse Pointe over the weekend. Still the best breakfast and best egg white veggie omelets. Oh, the OJ and pancakes aren’t too bad either! But the wait can be treacherous.
The hottest food concept is pork belly. Take ribs without the bones, add another 50% fat, and you have pork belly. Who comes up with this stuff? Aren’t supposed to eat healthier? Not this weekend!
Happy Tuesday!
