Brilliant Cammie + ForPro Polish Display Ring + Essie Gel Collection = Amazing Idea

Brilliant Cammie + ForPro Polish Display Ring + Essie Gel Collection = Amazing Idea

One of the best books of all time is Malcolm Gladwell’s book, The Tipping Point. Among topics Gladwell writes about, one is about how new products take off and he mentions the “early adopters” as his main reason.

Early adopters are the ones that wait in line for hours to buy the new iPhone. They camp out for concert tickets. They must have the newest and greatest and be FIRST to have it.

Diva Nails with multiple locations, this particular one is owned by Cammie and her husband Eddie, are true early adopters when it comes to nails. They must be first with everything. So they always have the new collections the day they come out. They were the first salon to have Vinylux. And they were the first salon to have the new Essie Gel collection.

It’s always good to follow early adapters since they know firsthand if the product is good or not. Too many times Cammie will give me a look and tell me the product is no good. I tell her the product is good but then she makes a face and I know I cannot convince her otherwise. When she tells me a product is good, I run back and order a lot of it. That is why I knew Vinylux was going to be a homerun.

So I was excited to visit with Cammie after she received the new Essie Gels to see how they were doing and if they passed the Cammie test. She said, “The customers like it.” WHEW! It is way too early to tell since the ultimate test comes later when it comes to removal and then how the nails are 6 months later, but for now, Cammie is happy.

But what really caught my eye was what she did with the ForPro Display Ring for the Essie Gel collection. It was so ingenious, that I had to share with my readers. She not only painted each nail tip with the Essie Gel shade, but she labeled one side with the gel polish name and the opposite side with the matching polish name. The idea was so simple that it was genius. Clients could instantly see the difference between the shades.

I asked Cammie to make these for me so I can sell to my customers. She smiled and looked at me and said “Sure, for you, $50!” I smiled back and said “That is more than $1 a nail, too high.” I got her down to $40. But what the heck, that’s a small price to pay for perfection.

Who buys souvenirs? I was in Orlando and the airport is souvenir central. I remember as a kid my parents would bring me back something to appease me being gone two weeks. Best selling treat in Florida airports is the coconut squares.

Does the Taco Bell You Tube video make you want to stop eating fast food? Actually, it’s the closed kitchens I worry about most.

Speaking of Orlando, we were exhibiting at the Premier show. Certainly the best show in the industry and if they could get rid of the flea markets operated by both Salon Centric and BSG in the back, it would certainly add a bit of professionalism back to the show.

Disney just raised its ticket price to Disney World to $95 a pop. If they made it $125 a pop, would it make a difference? The place is too busy to enjoy at any price. Endure, endure, endure.

We had a hugely successful warehouse sale this past Sunday with shoppers hunting the warehouse for bargains. And bargains they found. Great job by all the TNG staff to assist the shoppers!!

Sale day 001

Vinylux update: We finally received our wall racks and instead of shipping all 62 shades, we will be shipping 50 shades to those waiting patiently. We still do not have an update on the 12 missing shades but at least we have inventory on all the others. CND had their new booth at the Premier Show staffed with plenty of CND techs sporting Vinylux bright green T-Shirts. Very impressive.

Busiest hair care booth was once again Moroccanoil. They were standing 6 deep to buy goods at regular pricing. Matrix and Paul Mitchell were also busy but they had a huge stage presence.

Airlines are starting to sell annual memberships for baggage (checked and on-board) along with premium economy seats for $399 and $499. Hey if Disney can charge $50 a day per person for a fast pass and Sea World can charge $20 a day for VIP parking, why not? I wonder how much an annual pass at a massage studio chain such as Massage Green or La Vida would cost.

Are more people sick this time of year in history or what? I have never heard about so many bronchitis cases ever. Blame the lousy weather.

Adults 45-54 #1 worry as they get older: Memory. Heck, guys have trouble remembering at all ages.

Happy Monday!

What is your favorite food to chow down on during the holiday?

Today is already May 22, 2013 and it still doesn’t feel like the season has started. This weekend will be in the low to mid-60’s and with Memorial Day already here, there isn’t going to be much of summer.

In less than a month, the days start getting shorter.

I have been reading In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. Published way back in 1959, the true story depicts a small town Kansas family shot in cold blood by an ex-con (haven’t gotten to the motive part yet). Capote actually stationed himself in the small town for four years to help solve the crime. The killers were eventually caught and (sorry, can’t say what  happened to them). More importantly I read about Capote and his history is fascinating. Read more about him here.

Is it me or are driver’s more rude than ever? And do you ever wonder how someone can drive below speed limit in the passing lane of the highway?

I heard a report that teens are pissed that their parents are on Facebook and Twitter paying attention to them and what they are posting. Really?

Will Facebook be around in 10 years?

On the Vinylux issue, we have no idea what is going on. We still haven’t received all the shades and we know customers and nail techs are upset. The fact is CND couldn’t have estimated the demand for this yet on the other hand, there is no reason why at least all the colors weren’t initially shipped. We hope to have more wall racks within the next week or so and will keep you updated on open stock colors.

I don’t know about you but there is nothing better than a good slab of baby back ribs during the Memorial Day weekend. I like the sauce on the side.

When was the last new mall or strip center you saw go up? And how many new store concepts have you seen over the last five years?

Caribou coffee is out, Starbucks is in.

Drew and Mike on WRIF are out after 22 years. Too old. Time out for the Y generation.

I’m at the age where I don’t need DJ’s on the radio, at the bar or at the pool. YIKES!

Life really is a transition of sorts now that I think about it. You go from baby formula to whole milk to juice to milk shakes to soda pop to beer to wine to vodka and Red Bull to scotch to warm milk to sipping water through a straw.

We are in the final chapter of putting together THE BEAUTY BOOK Fall Edition and let me say, this will be a game-changer for all. We cannot wait for its release July 10.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

In case you were wondering about Vinylux by CND, we received 13 colors and a portion of wall racks. The wall racks are sold out and we hope to get another 100 in a couple of weeks. We are still waiting the status of the open stock shipment. I did open up one of the wall racks and was quite surprised to see how nice of a job CND did with these. Each rack (there are two) is pre-formed and has a unique beveled spot for each bottle. There are nice graphics on each shelf and it comes with an attractive header and polish tip discs. Those that didn’t pre-order this will be sorry. The first weekly polish is on its way to being a home run, but first, we need our order.

Speaking of polish, the new Cuccio Matchmaker’s are a match made in heaven. For only $7.99 salon price, you receive a matching Veneer and Polish, $16.00 value. The Matchmaker’s are available in 30 shades and have a very limited quantity. We already sold out our first shipment but will be back in stock early May.

Our first warehouse sale in a long time takes place Sunday, June 2 from 10AM to 2PM. It will feature lots of equipment, nail polish, hair tools, Ginger Lily Farms 8 oz. and other assorted goods. Savings up to 90% make it especially fun to shop.

Our Brazilian Blowout launch event is this Monday at our Academy in Farmington Hills and is oversold. With Mike Brady at the helm, the brand has re-invented itself and is the #1 straightening system going right now.

Are men getting more manicures?

With all the buzz about nail polish, wouldn’t it be great if we could color hair just like nails and make it EasyPeasy?

I hate to brag but our new The Industry Source magazine is one of our best yet. Love the cover featuring CND’s Vinylux model although leave it to Jan Arnold not to do a normal set of nails on the model. Jan has an entire feature inside the magazine.

Spring is officially coming to Michigan today after a brutal winter and extended lousy wintery spring period. Finally warmth and sunshine.

I’m starting to watch Dexter on demand. Are there guys like Dexter running around and we don’t know it?

Is it me or haven’t there been any trendy things going on in a while?

I’m off to Madrid for the big Colomer hairdresser award event. Never been to Spain but I heard the event draws thousands from across Europe and is quite the spectacle. I will take photos and share.

Happy Friday!
